Explores the basic concepts of ICT together with its role and applicability in today's knowledge based society

Notes
Data is raw, unprocessed facts with no meaning attached yet — a number, a word, a single reading. Information is data that has been processed and given context, so it becomes useful for making a decision.
25, 30, 28, 32 are just data on their own — four numbers with no story. Plot them against the days of the week and average them, and you get "this week's temperature has been rising" — that is information.
- Data is the raw material: one exam score
- Information is the finished product: a class average, a rank, a trend
The data life cycle
Every piece of data moves through three stages before it disappears again:
- Creation — data is generated: a sensor reading, a form submission, a bank transaction
- Management — data is stored, organised, backed up, and processed into information
- Removal of obsolete data — data no longer accurate, needed, or legally required to keep is deleted or archived
Skipping that third stage is not free. A system that never deletes old records slows every search down, and can breach data-protection law the moment it keeps something it no longer has a reason to hold.
What makes information valuable
Information is only worth acting on if it is:
- Timely — it arrives while it can still be used
- Accurate — free from errors introduced while collecting or processing it
- In context — meaningful for the situation it is used in
- Understandable — presented so the reader can actually interpret it
- Low in uncertainty — trustworthy enough to base a decision on
Exam angle: a scenario question usually tests exactly one of these five properties at a time. Read for which one is missing, and answer that — don't list all five unless the question actually asks for them.

Data is generated the instant an event happens — typed in, sensed, scanned or submitted.
A student taps "Submit" on a mock exam. That instant, a new record is created: their answers, the time taken, the raw score.
